Whether you’re a dancer, a yogi, or a football player, flexibility plays an important role in your skill level. The more flexible you are, the more agile you are. Plus, it’s much easier to avoid injury if you have great flexibility. Here are a few good ways to improve your range of motion.
Focusing on your warm up is a great way to improve flexibility. If you’ve been skipping your warm up, your muscles are probably suffering. It’s a good idea to hold stretches for 15-20 seconds each to ensure that your muscles are warmed up and ready to go. Then, do some lunges, squats, and pushups before starting any sort of serious workout. This will all serve to wake your body up, reduce risk of injury, and improve your flexibility.
Just as your warm up is important, so is your cool down. Long-duration stretching after a session at your local fitness center allows you to lengthen and relax any muscles that may have tightened up during your work out.
Along with stretching and warming up, consider incorporating massages into your exercise plan. Use a foam roller to roll your muscles out both before and after a solid work out. By giving your muscles some extra TLC, they’ll stretch more easily and give you a fuller range of motion.
